GARDAÍ in Limerick have giving warning that thieves are targeting certain cars to steal and to subsequently use for joy riding.

A Garda spokesman said that car thieves are currently targeting second-hand Japanese imports as, unlike in the EU, Japanese cars are not required to be fitted with an immobiliser. An immobiliser is an additional security devise on a car that prevents it from starting unless the correct key or key fob is used.

Garda John Finnerty said that there has been a “noticeable spike” in the theft of Mazda Demio models, the Toyota Aqua model, and the Toyota Vitz model in recent times in the Limerick Division.

“If you are buying a car, ask the car dealer if the car has an immobiliser fitted. If it hasn’t, you can get one fitted retrospectively,” he said.

One such car – a Silver Toyota Vitz – was stolen from the Haymarket and Cathedral Place area in Limerick City between 9pm on Wednesday November 6 and 4am the following morning, Garda Finnerty said.

Anyone who has seen the stolen car is asked to contact Gardaí at Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212 400.

Meanwhile, Gardaí are also advising people buying second-hand cars to be careful of where they have come from.

Garda Finnerty explained that “it is important that you protect yourself and your investment against any criminal activity. A bad decision may cost you thousands of euro, but a little research and homework can help take the risk out of buying your car and give you years of safe and happy motoring.”

“A maxim that very suitably applies to buying a second-hand car is ‘if you don’t ask the right questions – you won’t get the right information’,” he said.

Garda Finnerty’s advice is to buy from an established reputable dealership, as “this gives you peace of mind should your car prove to be faulty or improper”.

“You will also have a better legal footing should a dispute arise after the sales transaction. Most reputable dealers will offer you differing periods on a warranty but it will usually be not less than six months. Take care to study the terms and conditions of the warranty and what exactly is covered.”
