Council pays out €18,000 in pothole damage claims

LIMERICK City and County Council has paid out over €18,000 in claims as a result of damages to vehicles due to potholes on Limerick roads since last year.

Fine Gael councillor Liam Galvin asked for a breakdown for each district from 2023 to 2024 year to date at last week’s full meeting of Limerick City and County Council.

Councillors were informed that a total of 329 claims were made.

The largest number of claims were made in the Adare-Rathkeale District, which had a total of 123. This was followed by the Cappamore-Kilmallock District with 108 claims and both Newcastle West and the Metropolitan District with 49 claims each.

Of the 123 claims in the Adare-Rathkeale area, 45 were successful and 17 unsuccessful. A total of €9,600 was paid out in damages.

In Cappamore-Kilmallock 46 of 108 claims were successful and a further 43 were unsuccessful with €6,700 paid out in claims.

In Newcastle West 48 of the 49 claims were unsuccessful. While in the Metropolitan District, €2,000 was paid out to the nine successful claimants. A further 28 were unsuccessful.

John Gannon of the Council’s Transportation and Mobility Directorate said that some claims notified have been passed to third parties following investigation.

Not all claims, he added, have been investigated to date.
