Joanne Ryan’s In Two Minds playing off Broadway

LIMERICK playwright Joanne Ryan has one of her critically acclaimed plays running at 59e59 Theatre in New York.

 In Two Minds and is inspired by Joanne’s experiences of her mum’s bipolar disorder. 

“She asked me to write it back in 2017 when I was working on my first show Eggsistentialism. It was initially commissioned for development by Lime Tree Theatre and then commissioned for production by Olivier award-winning Fishamble: the New Play Company.”

In Two Minds premiered in Dublin Theatre Festival in 2023 and had a week-long run in Belltable after the festival. It won the 2023 Green Room Award for Best New Play. Then last year it had a run in The Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh as part of Edinburgh Fringe where it was nominated for the Mental Health Foundation Fringe Award 2024.

The play was directed by Sarah Jane Scaife and stars Pom Boyd (The Dry) and Karen McCartney who are, “both incredible and being rightly lauded for their performances,” adds Joanne.

Thanks to support from Culture Ireland, it’s currently having an Off-Broadway run in 59e59 Theatre in New York.

“It is a part of the First Irish Festival which is just incredible. It’s my US debut and it’s very surreal to have my work presented Off-Broadway! I was able to get to the US for the opening last weekend which was amazing and we’ve been getting a great response to the show from New York critics and audiences.”
