LIMERICK people who tune into RTÉ for their news coverage will be sad to hear that one the best-known figures on screen and air, Cathy Halloran, is retiring from her position as Mid West Correspondent after almost four decades.
Ms Halloran made the news public on her X (formerly Twitter) account saying that she had “some news of my own, I have decided to exit my working life in RTÉ News and retire early”.
Cathy has worked with RTÉ News for almost 40 years, 31 of those covering headline events in the Mid West region.
A native Dubliner, she now lives in Mayorstone Gardens in the heart of Limerick City with her husband, Nicky Woulfe and son John Michael.
Cathy has covered the defining stories in Limerick across her long career, including the devastating gangland wars, the exit of Dell’s manufacturing division in 2009 and the subsequent loss of 1,900 jobs on Shannonside, the ongoing challenges facing University Hospital Limerick, the growth of Shannon Airport, and more recently, the historic election of Limerick’s first ever directly-elected mayor, John Moran.
She began her journalism career in the 1980s with The Farmer Magazine and went on to report for the Connacht Tribune in Galway.
During her time working in Dublin for RTÉ, she covered the Beef Tribunal and and other history-making events.
From elections to crime, court cases, planning rows, community events, visiting dignitaries, tragedies, and the heartbreak and triumphs of ordinary people, Cathy has covered the entire range of stories demanded of a talented working journalist.
Saying her farewells on X, she thanked all those who had shown her courtesy and enabled her in her career.
“A massive thank to so many who have shared their stories, princes, presidents, and people — an honour and thanks so much to my talented colleagues especially the team in the regions,” she wrote.
