A TALENTED group of budding young fashion designers have been “backpedalling” their way to success, with their eyes set on the prize at the Junk Kouture All-Ireland Final.
Three students from Coláiste Íde agus Iosef – David MacAodha, Liam Collins, and Mark O’Sullivan – have earned their way into the final of the national fashion competition which sees students tasked with using recycled materials to create iconic and bold clothing creations.
The trio, with their ‘Backpedalling’ design, became the first boys team in the school’s history to qualify for the prestigious finals.
A represenative for the school said that the boys’ design “promotes sustainability and the importance of green transport, particularly in cities”.
“The name reflects the need to ‘backpedal’ from current environmentally harmful practices. The design draws inspiration from the Limerick Greenway, music artist Prince, and steampunk aesthetics.
“The standout piece, a bike wheel headpiece designed as a working clock, symbolises ‘turning back time’ on climate change. A sturdy frame from an old bike keeps the wheel stable while allowing movement,” they added.
Materials for the creation were donated by Locomotion Bike Rental at Barnagh Gardens and the Sue Ryder charity shop.
“The boys also delivered a memorable performance during the regional competition. Liam Collins, who modelled the outfit, showcased it to ‘Time Is Running Out’ by Muse – reinforcing their urgent message on climate change,” the spokesperson explained.
The final will take place in the Helix in Dublin on May 7, when the trio will face off against 160 teams from schools across Ireland.
