SUPPORTERS of Limerick Celtics face a marathon day at the National Basketball Arena in Dublin on Saturday.
No fewer than three of the club’s teams compete in National Finals.
First onto court are the young men’s side against Tralee Warriors in the BIDL (Basketball Ireland Development League) Final at noon, to be followed at 5.30pm with Celtics against Cavan Eagles in the Women’s National League Final and then at 8pm Celtics face Portlaoise Panthers in the Men’s National League Final.
In their most recent outing, Celtics (Men’s) managed to keep a tenacious Ulster University at bay to secure a 73-65 victory at Crescent College.
“That was a tough win today against an experienced Ulster University side” said Tony Hehir, Limerick Celtics head coach. “Our work rate again had a huge impact on the final result and our supporters on the day really helped to fuel our team’s energy. And, we’re delighted to be in the league final against Portlaoise Panthers in Dublin.”
A fortnight ago, a big three-pointer followed by two free throws by Shelby Harmeyer saw Celtics battle back from five points down over the closing 35 seconds to force overtime and, ultimately, prevail 85-80 against Limerick Sport Huskies to reach Women’s final
“Both teams played excellent basketball and it really went down to the wire” said Jordan Hehir, Limerick Celtics head coach.
“It shows great character to come out on top in a game like that and huge credit to our bench who stepped up and made winning plays.
“We’re very proud of the team’s performance and it’s now on to the final against a strong Cavan side who beat us in the cup” he added.
