A NEW community kitchen, which will support 93 clients of the Simon homeless charity and the wider community in the heart of Limerick City, has been opened.
The newly renovated community kitchen at Oak Lodge on Clare Street has been made possible by the support of the Limerick City and County Council and Sláintecare.
Simon Mid West project manager Melissa Fitzgerald said the new kitchen is “being opened with the goal of supporting our clients and the local community by providing access to classes, nutritious meals, and a welcoming space for learning and connection”.
The kitchen will also be available for use by other local services by appointment.
The facility offers a broader range of nutritious meal options compared to traditional food banks, promoting healthier eating habits and contributing to improved physical health within the community.
The space also provides a welcoming environment where people can come together, reducing isolation and fostering a sense of belonging, especially for those experiencing hardship.
Through collaboration with other services in the area, the initiative connects individuals to job openings, training programs, and support networks.
Deputising for the Mayor of Limerick to officially open the community kitchen, Cllr Sarah Beasley said: “This initiative is about more than just providing meals; it is about empowering some of the most vulnerable members of our community with the skills, confidence, and support they need to take control of their health and wellbeing.”
