INDEPENDENT councillor Ursula Gavan has called on the Council for an update on previous engagements with Limerick Animal Welfare and An Garda Síochána to crackdown on the numerous puppy farms throughout the city and county.
Cllr Gavan was told at the March Metropolitan District meeting that complaints regarding illegal dog breeding establishments are investigated by the dog wardens, sometimes in conjunction with An Garda Síochána.
Limerick Animal Welfare, she was informed, does not have a statutory role regarding this process.
Councillors were also told that the dog breeding establishment function of the Council is in the process of being taken over by the Department of Agriculture.
