High Court revokes bail for man charged with dealing cocaine in Limerick after alleged curfew breach

Owen Treacy (28) was remanded in custody.

A MAN accused of dealing a significant quantity of cocaine in Limerick has been remanded in custody after a court heard he breached terms of a €20,000 bail bond.

Owen Treacy Jnr (28), of St Senan’s Street, St Mary’s Park, Limerick City, was arrested on foot of a High Court warrant and had his bail revoked at a sitting of the High Court.

Detective Garda Conor Ryan, Limerick Garda Divisional Drugs Unit (DDU) at Henry Street Garda Station, told the court on Friday that Mr Treacy had breached a nightly curfew imposed on him by the courts last December.

Mr Treacy was remanded in custody to appear before the High Court again on Wednesday.

The Limerick man is charged with one count of possessing €35,000 of cocaine for sale or supply, contrary to Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act on September 15, 2024.

He is also charged with one count of possession of cocaine, contrary to Section 3 of the Act, on the same date.

On September 17 last, Gardaí told a hearing of Limerick District Court that Mr Treacy had travelled on a dirt bike, ferrying cocaine packages, from a location near his home to Castle Street in Limerick City on September 15.

Detective Garda Adrian Cahill told the hearing it was his opinion that, if granted bail, Mr Treacy would “commit further serious crimes, will fail to meet any bail conditions, and he will continue to engage in the distribution of cocaine in the Limerick region and beyond”.

Detective Garda Adrian Cahill told the hearing that he observed Mr Treacy placing packages into a car at Castle Street. When Gardaí swooped on the vehicle, they recovered packages of cocaine, the court heard.

Detective Garda Cahill alleged in court that, at the time, he and colleagues at the Limerick DDU were keeping Mr Treacy under surveillance as part of an “intelligence-led operation targeting the sale, supply, and distribution of controlled drugs in the King’s Island area”.

Gardaí recovered two packages from the car which contained cocaine with a street value of €35,000, Detective Garda Cahill said.

Mr Treacy, a father of two and a well-known soccer player in the Limerick District League, made no reply to the charges.

Mr Treacy had been under orders by the High Court to obey a nightly curfew, sign on daily at a Garda station, reside only at his home address, and not travel abroad.
