Limerick councillor asks who holds the reigns of horse warden role

Social Democrats councillor Shane Hickey-O'Mara.

SOCIAL Democrats councillor Shane Hickey-O’Mara got up on his gallop with the Council at this month’s Metropolitan District meeting asking if a specific staff member holds the title of Horse Warden.

“If not, do they intend to fill this role?” the City North representative asked. Cllr Hickey-O’Mara was informed that the title is not a role set out under the Control of Horses Act 1996.

“The veterinary section of Limerick City and County Council has responsibility for enforcement of the control of horses bye laws. Section 3 of the act allows the Council to appoint authorised persons who may exercise any of the functions conferred under this act, such as the seizure of horses,” Senior Engineer Aidan Finn told the SocDems councillor.
