HISTORY lovers, curious minds, and anyone who enjoys a cracking good yarn, with a dash of the trademark Shannonside sense of humour would be well advised to tune into a new podcast launched this week by an award-winning local historian and columnist with this newspaper.
The Limerick’s Life podcast is a new monthly podcast diving into the fascinating history of Limerick. Hosted by historian and author, Sharon Slater, and the quick-witted and inquisitive Peter, Limerick’s Life brings to life the stories that have shaped Limerick in an engaging and entertaining way.
Sharon is well known across Limerick as an award-winning historian. Her website has been unearthing tales from Limerick’s past for more than two decades, in which times she has also served as historian-in-residence at Ormston House, published the successful 100 Women of Limerick and The A-Z of Curious County Limerick books, as well as winning the Heritage Council’s National Heritage Hero Award.
Co-host Peter brings a fresh and humorous perspective to Sharon’s historical yarns, armed with a microphone and an endless supply of questions.
The new pod unearths tales of sieges, legendary figures, and ghostly legends, while Peter poses the questions listeners have always wondered about — like whether Vikings ever got lost on the Shannon or if medieval Limerick had decent pubs.
“We want to make history accessible, fun, and a little unexpected,” says Sharon. “Limerick’s past is packed with incredible stories, and this podcast is all about sharing them in a way that everyone can enjoy.”
Peter added: “I have no credentials, no historical knowledge, but I do have a microphone and a lot of questions. And if there’s a biscuit-related uprising in Limerick’s past, I intend to find out about it.”
An entertaining listen for lifelong Limerick residents or those just discovering the county’s rich history, Limerick’s Life promises captivating stories, lively discussions, and a few surprises along the way.
Limerick’s Life Podcast is available on all major podcast platforms, including Spotify, Apple, and YouTube, with new episodes released monthly. The first episode, ‘Monkey Business on George’s Street’, is out now.
