LIMERICK has been given the honour of hosting this year’s Nation Famine Commemoration, which takes place on May 17.
The announcement was made by Limerick TD and Minister for Arts and Culture, Patrick O’Donovan, who confirmed that the 2025 commemorations will be held in Kilmallock.
The event will take place in Kilmallock Famine Memorial Park, located within the historic Kilmallock Union Workhouse complex.
This is the first time the national commemoration has taken place in County Limerick.
Events will include military honours before culminating in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of all those who suffered or perished during the Irish Famine.
Commenting on the news, Minister O’Donovan said that “it is with a deep sense of solemnity and pride that I announce Kilmallock, County Limerick, as the chosen location for this year’s National Famine Commemoration”.
“The Famine not only reshaped the Irish landscape but also left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of generations. As we gather here this year, we do so not only to remember the lives lost but to honour the resilience, compassion, and strength that have defined our people in the face of hardship.”
The Limerick TD added that the memorial park, the site for this year’s National Famine Commemoration, “is built on the very burial ground where famine victims were laid to rest in mass graves”.
“It is believed that many are interred here, and the site stands as a testament to the loss, suffering, and endurance of this community.”
