FINE Gael councillor Sarah Kiely, who last month called for a pedestrian crossing on O’Connell Street at the junction of Bedford Row and Thomas Street, has received confirmation that works are to go ahead.
During last month’s Metropolitan District meeting, Cllr Kiely told the Council executive that people are constantly asking councillors why the pedestrian crossing can’t be reinstated.
She also claimed to be carrying out her own research and liaising with different local authority departments on the matter.
This week, the City East representative got confirmation from the local authority that the crossing will be reinstalled at the Bedford Row junction.
“I got a commitment that once the safety report was finalised a decision would be made by the Transportation Director and the management team. On Monday that confirmation came, and I was told it was agreed,” Cllr Kiely told the Limerick Post.
“Pedestrian safety should be paramount in any scheme and thankfully with unanimous support from the Council chamber, the Council executive acted on my request.
Cllr Kiely said that “the works will hopefully take place during the summer to minimise disruption to people”.
“The design and costs are being looked at and progressing well. I have also highlighted the need for a piece of public art at the curve as outlined previously,” she said.
“The Council can reapply for a piece of public art and that’s what I’m now looking for. It will add to the area, and it was part of the original plans for O’Connell Street.
