AN ORIGINAL new play, The 27 Club, written by local playwright Sharon Bromell and directed by Niamh Bowen, is set to take the stage at Belltable next week.
The story is loosely based on the legend surrounding rock stars who died at the age of 27. According to folklore, these musicians made a pact with the Devil, trading their souls for extraordinary talent but ultimately paying the price with their lives.
The legend dates back to the 1930s when blues musician Robert Johnson, once considered mediocre, astounded his Mississippi community with his sudden transformation into a remarkable performer. Rumours spread that he had struck a deal at a crossroads, sealing his fate at 27.
Over the years, artists such as Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison have all been linked to this infamous club.
The 27 Club brings this tale to the present day, blending crime, drama, and live music inspired by these legendary musicians.
The play follows Lucas, a teenage musician at an elite London boarding school, who is discovered by a renowned record producer. However, his real background does not fit the rockstar narrative, so a fabricated story is created. When the truth is leaked to the press, a deeper secret is exposed, bringing past ghosts back to haunt him.
Performed by the new theatre group Killer Productions, the cast of thirteen has been rehearsing since June at various Limerick venues, supported by LCETB. Writer Sharon Bromell said, “I’m delighted to see the script come to life.” Director Niamh Bowen added, “Limerick is in for a treat when the production hits the stage.”
The 27 Club runs at Belltable on Wednesday March 19 and Thursday March 20. Tickets have been snapped up for these performances with just a few seats available via www.belltablelimetree.ie
