Former CCTV cameras on Old Cork Road were not ‘justified, proportionate, or necessary’

Fianna Fáil councillor Catherine Slattery has asked the Council to install a yellow box from Childers Road into Janesboro.

FIANA Fáil councillor Catherine Slattery pushed Limerick City and County Council on broken CCTV on the Old Cork Road to learn that cameras did “not meet the required criteria of being justified, proportionate, and necessary”.

The Council explained why the CCTV infrastructure at the junction of Crossagalla and Bawnmore Road are not operational, revealing that, following the Data Protection Commissioner’s review of CCTV in Limerick, over 400 cameras were reviewed, including this location, to ensure compliance with the An Garda Síochána Act, Data Protection Act, GDPR, and The Law Enforcement Directive.

“It was determined that cameras at this location did not meet the required criteria of being justified, proportionate, and necessary. As a result, CCTV at this location is not authorised for operation,” a Council representative said.
