Historic Sarsfield Rock ambush site seeks upgrade funding

Independent councillor Brigid Teefy.

LIMERICK City and County Council has been urged to carry out improvement and maintenance works to the site of the 1690 ambush of the siege train at Sarsfield Rock in Ballyneety.

With the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the monument approaching in 2026, Independent councillor Brigid Teefy proposed that upgrade works be carried out in advance at the historical site.

The Cappamore-Kilmallock District, she was informed at the recent area meeting, has been liaising with the organising committee on their plans to hold an event to mark the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the site in 1976.

It was noted that the site on which the rock is located is on private lands.

“The organising committee were advised to apply to the Capital Monuments Fund in 2026 to allow for the upgrade works to be carried out at the ‘gathering area’ of the rock site. They have since decided to apply to the Local Enhancement Fund to carry out works,” Cllr Teefy was told.

The Council also advised that they may be able to carry out improvements where required on the access footpath from the public road subject to the availability of adequate resources.
