GARDAÍ are investigating a firebombing of a car on the outskirts of Limerick City.
As part of a number of lines of enquiry, Gardaí are probing whether or not the arson attack is linked to violent feuding between rival groups operating in the Treaty City.
The arson occurred in Garryowen at around 11pm this past Thursday night (March 6).
A Garda spokesman said that “Gardaí attended the scene. A car was damaged by fire in the course of this incident.”
“No injuries were reported and investigations are ongoing.”
Garda sources said violent incidents have increased of late among feuding groups in Limerick, including firebombs, pipebomb attacks, shootings, and stabbings.
The Defence Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), which deals with retrieving and disposing of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) has had to respond to several IED incidents in Limerick City over the past several months.
It is understood that several feuds are happening in a number of areas around the city.
Extra Garda checkpoints are also being established on a nightly basis to curb the violence.
