43rd AA Convention discusses ‘rediscovering life in recovery’

THE 43rd Alcoholics Anonymous Limerick Area Annual Convention took place in the Castletroy Park Hotel over the weekend of February 7 to 9. The theme of the convention was ‘rediscovering life in recovery’.

“Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who have a problem with drink. We share our experience, strength, and hope with each other so we may solve our common problem and help others recover from alcoholism,” a spokesperson said.

“AA is open to anyone who has a problem with drink and wants to do something about it.”

The convention is an annual celebration of sobriety for members in Limerick and further afield to meet up with friends, old and new, in a social environment.

Conventions are organised in various regions throughout Ireland. The Limerick convention mainly consisted of meetings for AA members only, which are called closed meetings.  Two meetings were open to the public, including the opening meeting on the Friday night.

It was well attended by over 200 people, made up of AA members and their families and friends. Several dignitaries were in attendance including representatives of the Mayor’s office, Garda Síochaná, Céim ar Chéim, and Limerick Suicide Watch.

“In the Limerick city and county area, we have approximately 30 groups. Meetings take place every day, during the morning, afternoon and evening as well as daily online meetings,” the spokesperson said.

Details of all of meetings can be found at alcoholicsanonymous.ie/.

For those who need to speak to someone, AA operates a helpline on 085 240 6867.

The organisation plans on organising more regular meetings in the Limerick area that are open to the public. Keep an eye on the press and local community groups for further information.
