Limerick Youth Theatre brings The Gold Mine to Belltable

LIMERICK Youth Theatre’s Transition Year Theatre (TYT) Company takes to the stage at Belltable on March 11 and 12 with The Gold Mine, an original play written and directed by John Hogan.

The play follows the dramatic downfall of an aristocratic family who squander their fortune on lavish galas.

When their wealth runs dry, they resort to theft and flee the country—only to find themselves relentlessly pursued by vengeful former friends determined to bring them to justice.

This extensive production is brought to life by 20 talented transition year students from schools across Limerick city and county, with support from undergraduate theatre students Alex Broghan, Carole Malone, and Lauren White from Mary Immaculate College. Their expertise in contemporary and applied theatre studies adds a professional touch to the performance.

Speaking about the production, John Hogan said: “One of the challenges of the Transition Year Theatre programme is finding a play with anywhere from 15-30 characters, ensuring each cast member gets their moment to shine.

“Ensemble plays work best, so The Gold Mine was created to accommodate different factions while maintaining a strong narrative.”

The production is part of Limerick Youth Theatre’s TYT programme, a unique initiative offering transition year students hands-on theatre-making experience. Under professional mentorship, participants not only act but also gain insight into the workings of a theatre company.

Artistic Director Angie Smalis added: “We are thrilled to offer TY students from seven schools the chance to gain real-world theatre experience. This is going to be a fun, engaging night out for family, friends, and school communities.
