Big local derby basketball tie at UL today

THERE is a local derby in Division One of the Men’s National Basketball League when Southern Conference winners Limerick Celtics run up against Limerick Sport Eagles at University of Limerick later today (Wednesday tip-off 7.30pm).

Celtics are tipped to win and bring their unbeaten run in the competition to a remarkable 20 matches.

At the weekend, Tony Hehir’s side beat a gritty Dublin Lions, 88-83, in the capital. AJ Williams emerged top scorer on 30.

On the same night, Eagles lost 94-83 at Tolka Rovers.

In the Women’s League, Limerick Sport Huskies served up an impressive defensive display to see off Templeogue 77-41 in Dublin.

Scout Frame led the way in the scoring charts for Limerick with 30 points, while Delia Moore and Katie Black provided the visitors with 24 rebounds and 15 assists.

In a top-of-the-table clash, Celtics lost 65-50 to Cavan Eagles at Crescent College.
