LIMERICK City and County Council has announced the commencement of a six-month trial of bodycameras for traffic wardens in the Limerick Metropolitan District.

According to the Council, the six-month pilot “aims to enhance the safety and security of traffic wardens”, and comes following a public consultation with local residents, businesses, and other stakeholders.

The Council said that, during the pilot period, “cameras will remain off until a traffic warden perceives or anticipates a threat, at which point they will active the device to record audio, video, and GPS data”, which will be securely stored and accessed only by authorised personnel.

“The use of body-worn cameras will provide an extra layer of protection for traffic wardens, allowing them to carry out their duties without fear of intimidation,” a Council spokesperson said.
