A MAN is being questioned by Gardaí following his arrest overnight in connection with a seizure of an estimated €45,000 worth of cannabis in County Limerick.

The drugs were recovered Friday night (February 21) in the Castleconnell area in a search operation led by the Limerick Garda Divisional Drugs Unit which based at Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick City.

A man arrested as part of the Garda search operation is being questioned by Gardaí under Drug Trafficking legislation, and can be held for up to seven days without charge.

The Garda operation was a follow up to an earlier search operation in Castleconnell on Wednesday of last week, which resulted in the seizure of €10,000 worth of cannabis and almost €7,000 cash.

Both search operations were sanctioned by Garda management under the Operation Tara enhanced national anti-drugs strategy, launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris in July 2021.

Gardaí said the focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle, and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels — international, national, and local — involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale, and supply of controlled drugs.

A man in his 20s who was arrested and charged in connection with last Wednesday’s drug and cash seizure is due to appear before Limerick District Court next month.

A male juvenile, also arrested during last Wednesday’s Garda search operation, was released without charge and referred to the Garda Youth Diversion Programme.
