Limerick TD warns of attacks on motorcyclists by hammer-wielding thugs

Sinn Féin TD, Maurice Quinlivan.

GARDAÍ have been alerted to a surge of incidents in hammer-wielding thugs targeting motorcyclists in Limerick.

The incidents were highlighted by Limerick Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan after “a number of motorcyclists” contacted him about several recent attempted attacks in the Corbally area.

“One such biker advised me how he no longer feels safe in the area due to what he described as a ‘growing menace of being threatened by a group of young men armed with hammers’,” Deputy Quinlivan said.

“This motorcyclist enthusiast stated that there were two attempted hijackings this week within a 24-hour period.”

The Limerick TD said “another motorcyclist expressed disappointment on what he perceived to be the lack of Garda action to address these incidents”.

“I have written to the Garda Chief Superintendent to express my concern about these incidents, requesting some detail as to the number of such incidents and to understand what steps are being taken to bring a halt to these incidents,” Deputy Quinlivan said.

“I hope that the Gardaí will act and bring an end to these attacks,” he added.

“The suggestion that those involved in these incidents are armed with hammers adds a further element of thuggery and urgency to this issue. With weapons involved the danger of these incidents escalating increases.”

“Our motorcycle enthusiasts invest heavily in their vehicles, and they deserve to be able to engage in their pastime without fear of attack.”

Gardaí have been asked for comment about the alleged attacks described by Deputy Quinlivan.
