THE number of prisoners receiving disciplinary actions over incidents of disorder in Limerick Prison has risen significantly over the past two years.
That’s according to new figures which show a 43 per cent increase in disorder sanctions on prisoners within Limerick Prison of 461 in 2022 to 660 in 2024.
Disorder sanctions can be handed down for incidents involving physical assaults and violence to breaches of safety and good order within prisons.
Limerick Prison saw one of the largest increases in sanctions in the two-year period, alongside Mountjoy Prison in Dublin with a 69 per cent increase (from 1,253 incidents in 2022 to 2,123 in 2024) and Cork Prison, rising 39 per cent from 549 incidents in 2022 to 729 in 2024.
Increases in Castlerea Prison almost trebled from 208 to 616 in the same period.
