GARDAÍ have said that they were satisfied there was no credible threat to a number of schools which were put on lockdown in County Clare after they received a threatening email earlier this Tuesday morning.
An Garda Síochána is investigating the matter after an email warning that an attack was imminent, and that a person would be armed with firearms, was sent to the schools.
It’s understood all or a number of schools in County Clare took swift action and announced they would not be opening today.
The email, seen by the Limerick Post, also stated that undisclosed “items” had been placed in the vicinity of the schools, and that a person was going to carry out “one of the most prolific attacks” in the history of the State.
The email claimed a “manifesto” would be sent from the would-be assailant.
A Garda spokesman said that “following initial assessment, Gardaí are satisfied that the security threat is not credible and there is no ongoing risk to the public”.
“Gardaí are engaging with the affected educational establishments with regard to this incident,” the spokesman said.
“Enquiries are ongoing. No further information is available at this time,” they added.
Another Garda spokesman said they were not aware that any arrests had been made.
County Clare TD Cathal Crowe described the threat as “shocking”, and added that “this was a very scary incident for parents, students, school staff, and the general public and I have full confidence in Clare’s Gardaí to properly investigate this and establish all the facts.”
