TWO horses were seized by Limerick City and County Council from the Childers Road area on January 19.

According to the local authority, an aged black female horse and a brown and white male yearling were seized, with the Council unable to identify the owner.

Almost 100 abandoned horses were seized by the Council last year. In the vast majority of cases, horses seized by the Council are re-homed to charities outside of Limerick.

This comes following complaints of a dead horse left to rot in a field in the Carew Park area over the Christmas period.

A further three horses were seized outside Roxboro Garda Station in Limerick City late in December.

That’s according to Limerick City and County Council, who confirmed the seizure of a three-year-old brown and white female horse and two brown and white male foals outside the Garda station on the Roxboro Road on November 30.

Horses detained by the Council are held for five days before being disposed of in accordance with the Control of Horses Act, 1996, with most being rehomed to horse charities outside of Limerick.
