A LIMERICK academic has been appointed as head of a brand new department at Mary Immaculate College (MIC).
Dr Rebecca Purcell has been appointed head of the newly-established Business and Accounting Department at MIC, having started at the college in 2016.
Dr Purcell joined the institution as a lecturer in business studies in the Faculty of Arts and School of Post-Primary Education at MIC Thurles, following the incorporation of St Patrick’s College in Thurles by MIC.
Prior to joining St Patrick’s College, she lectured in the University of Limerick and Tipperary Institute.
Outlining her vision for her new department, Dr Purcell said that a commitment to excellence will be of central importance.
“I warmly welcome the establishment of the Department of Business and Accounting at MIC. Since 2016, business and accounting have been integral to our offerings, featuring prominently in five initial teacher education programmes at MIC Thurles, and more recently on the Bachelor of Arts programme, based at the MIC Limerick campus.
“My vision for the department is rooted in a commitment to academic rigour, research excellence, and practical relevance, fostered within a vibrant community and driven by an entrepreneurial spirit,” she said.
Professor Bill Leahy, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, said that the Faculty is “thrilled that Rebecca has taken on the role as our first Head of the newly formed Business and Accounting Department”.
“She brings wide experience and great expertise to the role and will effectively lead this dynamic department across two campuses”.
