A MAN, who was previously convicted of raping a woman at knifepoint, was this week found guilty of engaging in a sex act with a 14-year-old girl in Limerick.
The man, who cannot be named by court order to protect the identity of the victim, was convicted by a jury at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court this Tuesday (January 21).
The jury, which was not aware of the man’s rape conviction during the court sitting, deliberated for six hours and five minutes before they returned with a majority guilty verdict.
11 of the 12 jurors were in agreement with the verdict.
The trial, heard before Judge Colin Daly at Limerick Circuit Court, heard evidence that the man engaged the girl in performing oral sex on him in his car at the rear of a shopping centre.
The man had denied a single charge of “defilement of a child under the age of 17 years” on July 11, 2020.
Following the verdict, prosecuting barrister John O’Sullivan told the court that the man should be subjected to the terms of a sex offenders register.
Judge Colin Daly accepted the request and ordered that the man be placed on a sex offenders register and remanded him in custody to appear before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for sentence on February 10.
The man was previously convicted following a trial at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin of raping a woman at knifepoint in Limerick.
He was jailed for 10 years with the final two years suspended for committing the rape.
