THE Limerick Historical Society will hold its first lecture of the year this coming Friday (January 24), given by local expert in Irish military history, Stephen Kelly.

The lecture, taking place from 8pm at the Redemptorist Hall by the Redemptorist Church on South Circular Road in Limerick City, will focus on the military history of Sarsfield Barracks.

Mr Kelly recently organised a tour for the society of the barracks, which was built on land leased from John Thomas Monsell and completed in 1795.

It was handed over to the Irish Army following Irish Independence and renamed Sarsfield Barracks in 1926.
