AS THE open season on spreading organic slurry resumes, Limerick City and County Council has sent a reminder out to farmers across the county of their obligations.

The Council said that slurry must be spread at least five meters from open drains or streams, extending to 10m for the two weeks before and after the closed period, 10m from open drain or stream with steep sloped lands, 15m from a karst limestone feature, and 20m from a lake shoreline or turlough likely to flood.

Umbilical systems must not be used on saturated soil or when conditions pose a risk to water quality, a Council statement added.

Farmers were also reminded slurry should also only be spread in appropriate weather conditions.
