MAYOR John Moran hosted a mayoral reception for a number of inspiring local sporting heroes at the Council offices in Istabraq Hall on Merchant’s Quay in Limerick City.
The reception was to celebrate the outstanding achievements of local sports teams and athletes who attained outstanding achievements and represented Limerick with distinction in the last year. It is the first of two mayoral receptions for Limerick athletes to take place this month.
Honourees at the reception included:
- The Limerick Under 16 Camogie Team: Winners of the 2024 Munster and All-Ireland U16 Camogie Championships.
- The Munster Wheelchair Hurling Camogie Team: Champions of the 2024 All-Ireland Wheelchair Hurling Camogie Championship.
- Limerick members of Rowing Ireland, who put in stellar performances at the 2024 Home International and Coupe de la Jeunesse Rowing Championships.
- Diane Moore and Sophie Quirke, who represented Ireland in the 2024 U16 Polocrosse Tour to England.
- Members of Castletroy Golf Club, who saw success in the Irish Men’s Senior Cup in August 2024.
- Team Ireland Special Olympics representatives Brian Lowe, Andy Coyne, Emma Griffin, and Tara Loftus, for their achievements at the Princess Charlene Invitational in Monaco.
Mayor Moran said: “All are true role models for both young and old, inspiring us all with their achievements. Their success not only brings pride to Limerick but also aligns with our vision of a more healthy Limerick, promoting physical activity, teamwork, and community spirit.”
He concluded: “The diversity represented at this Mayoral Reception underscores the inclusive and supportive environment that Limerick fosters for athletes of all abilities and interests.”
Mayor Moran expressed his admiration for those in attendance, stating that “the teams we honoured this evening have shown exceptional dedication, skill, and sportsmanship with great success during the summer of 2024”.

Another reception honouring individuals who set high bars in sport in 2024 will take place on January 29.
