A MAN in his 30s was to appear before a special sitting of Ennis District Court this Sunday (January 19) in connection with the seizure of drugs and cash in Limerick City earlier this week.

The seizure came as part of a Garda sweep on an organised crime group suspected of breaking into homes and commercial properties and stealing high value vehicles.

According to a Garda statement this Sunday, the man, who was arrested during the series of raids which took place this past Monday (January 13), has since been charged and was to go before a special sitting of Ennis District Court at 2pm this Sunday.

Earlier in the week, Gardaí confirmed that officers from a number of county divisions conducted the city raids “as part of an operation targeting an organised crime group suspected of being involved in commercial and domestic burglaries”.

A Garda spokesman said that the value of the property that had been stolen from victims of the organised crime gang over the past 12 months was believed to be “substantial”.

The spokesman added that, following searches of a number of residences in the city on Monday believed to be associated with the gang, Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s, and seized suspected cannabis with an approximate value of €6,500. A sum of cash was also seized in the Garda sweep.

The ongoing Garda operation was led by the Garda Clare/Tipperary Division, supported by members from Galway and Limerick, the regional Armed Support Unit, as well as the Garda Dog Unit.
