GARDAÍ in Limerick will be out and about on the roads today (Wednesday January 15) as part of a national day of action targeting distracted driving.
The day of action kicked off at 7am today and runs until 7am on Thursday morning.
Officers will be on the lookout for those who are using a mobile phone while driving, or those who are otherwise distracted while behind the wheel.
The objective of the operation is the strict enforcement of the legislation surrounding the use of mobile phones while driving, as well as distracted driving.
Gardaí are warning drivers that while the mobile phone has become an incredibly useful and important part of modern life, it can be a deadly distraction while driving.
“These distractions do not require a person to hold or even touch a device and can pose a serious risk to the life of anyone in the vicinity of the distracted driver and indeed that of the driver,” said newly appointed Henry Street Crime Prevention Officer Michelle O’Halloran.
“Sadly, there have been already six persons killed on Irish roads this year and we are only just nearly halfway through this first month,” Sergeant O’Halloran said.
The main objective of today’s targeted operation is to make the roads a safer place and to reduce road deaths.
