Planning permission granted for 40 new Limerick City apartments

Planning permission for the development was granted by Limerick City and County Council.

LIMERICK city centre is set to get 40 new apartments after planning permission was granted for redevelopment of a long-vacant site.

Limerick City and County Council granted permission for Cherryfox Developments to construct two new apartment buildings with 40 units on a vacant site on Mungret Street in the city centre.

24 of the apartments will be one-bedroom units, while 16 will feature two bedrooms.

The apartments will be built on a site that adjoins the former Milk Market bar, which was itself recently granted planning permission to be turned into a youth hostel by nightclub owner Flan Costello.

Planning permission for the new apartment buildings were granted by the Council subject to 18 conditions.

Among the conditions are that the developer pay Limerick City and County Council €16,891 for connection to facilities and infrastructure in the area.

Also among the conditions are stipulations on the hours that works can be done in, that the developer submit revised plans for waste, public drainage, and lighting, and that works shall immediately stop on the site if bats are encountered until the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Department of Housing are consulted.

The site, which used to house the former Cathedral Carpets outlet until it was devastated by a fire in 2011, was purchased by Cherryfox in 2022.

The developer initially considered putting high-density student accommodation on the site, but decided against it following consultation with local educational institutions, who said there would be little market for this type of accommodation in the area.
