A MAN was arrested and drugs and cash were seized as part of a series of Garda raids in Limerick City this past Monday (January 13), the target of which was an organised crime group suspected of breaking into homes and commercial premises and thieving high value vehicles.

That’s according to a statement from An Garda Síochána, who confirmed that officers from a number of county divisions conducted the city searches “as part of an operation targeting an organised crime group suspected of being involved in commercial and domestic burglaries”.

A Garda spokesman said that the value of the property that has been stolen from victims of the organised crime gang over the past 12 months is believed to be “substantial”.

The spokesman added that, following searches of a number of residences in the city on Monday believed to be associated with the gang, Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s, and seized suspected cannabis with an approximate value of €6,500. A sum of cash was also seized in the Garda sweep.

“The drugs seized are now subject to analysis by Forensic Science Ireland,” the spokesman added

The ongoing Garda operation was led by the Garda Clare/Tipperary Division, supported by members from Galway and Limerick, the regional Armed Support Unit, as well as the Garda Dog Unit.

The arrested man was detained and questioned by investigating Gardaí, under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007, at a Garda station in County Clare.

He can be detained under the criminal legislation for up to seven days without charge.
