AHEAD of the final round of fixtures, the situation in Pool 3 of the Investec Champions Cup is delicately poised after Munster came out on top of Saracens on Saturday.
Just a single point separates leaders Northampton Saints from Munster and Saracens.
Munster visit the Saints next Saturday where a win would give them home advantage in the Round of 16.
The bulk of Munster’s points haul in the dogged 17-12 win over Saracens at Thomond Park on Saturday evening came around the hour mark, as Dian Bleuler and John Hodnett crossed for tries, both converted by Jack Crowley, who had earlier kicked a penalty.
Munster had trailed 9-6 at half-time.
“At half time we took a lot of reassurance in that, and everything was about freshness. We set ourselves up in the last 10 days to be fresh for the type of battle that it was, and that probably came through in the end,” commented Munster interim coach Ian Costello in an interview on RTÉ.
Added captain and Man of the Match Tadhg Beirne: “I think it’s been a tough couple of weeks at times, the performances from the outside may not look like they’ve been the best, but in terms of what we said we were going to do and the opportunities we were creating, we knew we were actually doing well.”
“We just had to stick with it and we were on the right side of one today thankfully, and hopefully we’ll do it again next week.”
