THERE appears to be a three-way contest to fill the huge Limerick goalkeeping duties of Nickie Quaid in 2025.
With Quaid sidelined by an anterior cruciate ligament injury for the foreseeable future, those in contention for the number one spot are Conor Hanley-Clarke (Kimallock), Shane Dowling (Na Piarsaigh), and Jason Gillane (Patrickswell).
In a practice match with University of Limerick at the weekend, Dowling and Gillane both featured, while Hanley-Clarke was an unused substitute.
UL won the contest by a couple of points, 1-19 to 1-17, with the Limerick goal courtesy of Séamus Flanagan (Feohanagh/Castlemahon).
The starting Limerick selection was largely a shadow outfit, but reasonably familiar faces on duty included Barry Murphy (Doon), Micheál Houlihan (Kilmallock) and Donnacha Ó Dálaigh (Monaleen).
John Kiely’s side open their National League with an away outing to All-Ireland finalists Cork on Saturday, February 1.
