Over 160 contraband items seized from Limerick Prison last year

THERE were a total of 161 items of contraband smuggled into Limerick Prison across 2024 and later found by prison guards.

That’s according to information provided to the Sunday World newspaper under the Freedom of Information act by the Irish Prison Service.

Figures show more than 2,300 reported items smuggled into prisons across the country last year.

In Limerick men’s and women’s prison, the 161 smuggled items found by prison guards include 59 reports of smuggled phones, 74 drug packages, and 28 weapons.

Limerick Prison saw the fifth highest number of smuggled items found in an Irish prison, after Wheatfield (819), Mountjoy (512), Cloverhill (442), and the Midlands Prison (190).
