THE WOMEN’S Shed Limerick has set its sights firmly on securing a new home in 2025.
After two years in operation, the Shed has gained huge momentum and the newly-elected committee wants to push for a place for the members to call their own.
Currently operating out of the Unicorn Bar in Dooradoyle, new chairperson Eimear Scully told the Limerick Post that the group is “very lucky to have the Unicorn, but in the long run we need a place of our own, similar to the Men’s Shed in Raheen”.
The Women’s Shed caters for members of all ages and aims to provide a place where women can meet, make friends, socialise, learn new skills, and get out of the house.
“It’s important for men to be able to get together and talk, but it’s important for women too,” Eimear said.
“I’ve honestly seen women whose lives have been changed. It can be very isolating being at home with a family or being new to the city if you’re a student or just arrived here for work. Women chat, exchange phone numbers, and go home smiling.”
The Shed has organised all kinds of events and talks including wholistic health, zumba, and burlesque nights.
“We’re hoping to have more social events in the coming year and spread the word to new members, everyone is welcome,” said Eimear.
The fundraising currently being undertaken by the group is to help buy a portacabin to provide a new temporary home.
“We’re talking to the Council and we’re hopeful of coming up with a site in the Dooradoyle or Raheen area where we can set up permanent home. That’s on our wish list this year,” Eimear said.
