LIMERICK City and County Council has confirmed that both Mungret and Castletroy playgrounds are closed today (January 3) due to current icy conditions.
The local authority said that a “further assessment will be made on Saturday 4th January” as to the re-opening of both playgrounds.
This comes as Met Éireann has forecast significant snowfall in the city and county across this weekend, with a Status Orange snow and ice warning setting in from 5pm on Saturday to 5pm on Sunday.
According to the Council, “parks and playgrounds across Limerick are currently being impacted by icy weather conditions”, with closures announced as the “safety of all users is a priority for Limerick City and County Council”.
“From 3rd January 2025 to 5th January, 2025, all Council-managed public amenities within the city and county areas of Limerick are being monitored and assessed and will only open if it is determined that ground conditions at each location are safe,” a statement from the Council said.
“Limerick City and County Council regrets any inconvenience to users.”
Further weather updates and announcements are expected as the day goes on.
