RECENT JT McNamara Munster National of €100,000 winner Real Steel has passed away, trainer Eric McNamara announced at the weekend.

Courtesy of a JP McManus-sponsored charity sweepstake, the win brought a welcome  €20,000 boost to Down Syndrome Limerick as the nominator.

A shrewd purchase by McNamara for £27,000 a couple of years ago, Real Steel – with Conor McNamara on board – famously won at handsome odds of 33/1 the €200,000 Paddy Power Handicap Chase at Leopardstown.

Prior to his arrival at Beechmount Stables, Real Steel was a dual Grade Two winner and sixth in the 2020 Cheltenham Gold Cup when under the care of Willie Mullins.

He later had a fruitless spell in the UK with Paul Nicholls.

At the weekend, McNamara said in a social media post:

“This morning we sadly lost our pride and joy Real Steel. He was loved and adored by many and his absence will leave such a void here at Beechmount. He gave us all some unforgettable days out and we are so proud of his achievements.

He added: “Our condolences go to his wonderful owner Tadhg Moynihan (Kerry) who had so much admiration and pride in Real Steel. He will be missed dearly.”

He was aged 11.
