YOUR eyes are not playing tricks on you, that elf has not come off the shelf and he’s not being punished for being on Santa’s naughty list – it’s Limerick journalist, author, and children’s entertainer, Anthony Galvin raising money for the Sightsavers charity.
Former Limerick Post journalist Anthony, whose book Family Feud was a nationwide bestseller, reflecting on the Limerick gangland terror that spanned more than two decades, is dressing as an elf and towing a car tyre around the county for the next two weeks to raise funds for the charity.
Anthony is training for the Sightsavers First Light for Sight expedition. On January 10, he will join a group flying to northern Scandinavia to face a gruelling hike and ski across snow and ice, in -20c, dragging their sleds behind them.
The former Limerick journalist said there will be no electricity, no facilities, just challenge to push him to the limits.
“We plan to watch dawn break over the frozen tundra after six weeks of darkness, and to raise vital funds to fight blindness in developing countries,” Anthony says.
“As the light breaks on us, we will know that our efforts will help the light break for people in developing countries with preventable blindness. The money we raise will go towards the vital work of Sightsavers in thirty countries across Africa and Asia.”
The adventurous Anthony will be in Limerick, Bruff, and Ardagh among other places, making balloon animals for children for donations to the cause.
“My target is to raise €5,000, which will be enough to cover 156 cataract surgeries. But if I can exceed that, all the better,” said Limerick’s newest elf.
