THE SEVENTH special memorial fundraiser for a much loved Limerick man takes place this St Stephen’s Day to raise cash for the Autism Supporting Diversity group.
The annual Thumbs Up for Benny soccer tournament is held every December 26 at the South Liberties GAA Club in Ballyneety. It kicks off this year from 10am.
The tournament is staged in memory of the late Brendan ‘Benny’ McNamara from Ballyneety, who died tragically in 2018 at the age of 25.
Each year since his death, the young man’s friends, who formed the Thumbs Up for Benny mental health awareness group, have organised the charity event in his memory.
Benny tragically lost his life to suicide at the age of 25. Magella McNamara, one of the organisers, told the Limerick Post that “a lot of money for good causes has been raised in his name” since his death.
Once again this year, there will be up to 80 players from all over Limerick, raising money for a good cause on a great family day out.
Donations can be made in any amount, however small, at idonate.ie/fundraiser/ThumbsUpForBenny13.
The event has raised around €5,000 last year for various charities and groups, including Limerick Suicide Watch and Milford Care Centre.
