A CONTRACTOR has been appointed by Limerick City and County Council to complete a long-awaited road in Limerick.
The local authority announced that Wills Bros Ltd have been appointed to finish construction on the Coonagh to Knockalisheen Distributor Road, which saw works paused after the previous main contractor went into receivership.
The €31million project is part of the Limerick Regeneration Framework Implementation Plan, which will deliver improved connectivity to residents and businesses in Moyross – who for a long time have lived with just one road in and out of the large community.
The project will see 2.1km of new dual carriageway built, as well as major upgrades to an existing single roadway, while there will also be three over-road railway bridges, three new roundabouts, and six signal-controlled pedestrian crossings.
The work will be done in phases, with the first phase set to open after the first 12 months of work. The entire project is set to be complete in 24 months after work restarts on the project.
Mayor of Limerick John Moran said that the long awaited project will be “transformative project for the whole northside of Limerick”.
“We hit many unexpected hurdles and it has taken longer than we would all have liked, but I want to acknowledge and thank everyone who stayed focused and helped push this outcome in time for Christmas.
“No community in Limerick should live on a cul-de-sac and this access is a key change for the Moyross of the future. It is a vital step forward in the delivery of the Limerick Regeneration programme,” Mayor Moran said.
