33 arrested in Garda ‘day of action’ in Rathkeale

33 arrests were made in Rathkeale this Thursday (Decelber 19).

GARDAÍ made a massive 33 arrests in the town of Rathkeale this Thursday (December 19) as part of a ‘day of action’ targeting ongoing criminal activity and anti-social behaviour.

An Garda Síochána confirmed that more than 20 Gardaí took part in the planned ‘day of action’, arresting 33 individuals, including 30 on outstanding bench warrants, two in connection with “ongoing criminal investigations”, and one for road traffic offences.

“In addition, 12 multi-agency checkpoints were conducted, resulting in one detection for driving under the influence of drugs, multiple searches under the Misuse of Drugs Act and one vehicle seizure under the Road Traffic Act,” a Garda spokesperson said.

Those arrested were brought before a sitting of the Newcastle West District Court.

Congratulating the officers involved on the successful sweep, Superintendent Michael Fleming, of Limerick County Community Engagement Functional Area, said: “Today’s operation was designed to support An Garda Síochána’s mission statement of ‘Keeping People Safe’. Recidivist criminals and persons wanted on warrant were targeted, arrested, and brought before the criminal courts.”

Superintendent Flemming added that “a key element of today’s operation was enforcement of road safety and a significant number of drivers were engaged with.”

“Christmas is a special time of year and I hope all road users will drive with care over the festive period, obey posted speed limits and never drive while intoxicated.”

Gardaí confirmed that the “operation is ongoing”.
