CONSTRUCTION work on the much anticipated Adare Bypass is set to get underway in January, Limerick City and County Council confirmed this week.

The Council announced that a contractor has been appointed to the long awaited road project, with work set to get underway in the coming weeks.

John Sisk and Son (Holdings) Ltd and Sorensen Civil Engineering Ltd, known as the Sisk Sorensen Joint Venture, have been awarded the contract to facilitate the early delivery of the road, with hopes of the project being complete ahead of the 2027 Ryder Cup in Adare Manor.

The government is investing €155million into the crucial infrastructure project, with enabling works having gotten underway in November 2023, including hedge clearance, fencing contracts, an archaeological resolution contract, the construction of three railway bridges, and haul road construction in addition to the diversion of numerous utility services.

The Council said the new 7km bypass will help to ease congestion on the N21 through the village of Adare, diverting any unnecessary traffic, including HGVs away from the village.

Welcoming the latest news on the project, Mayor of Limerick John Moran said that this latest step in the Adare Bypass project is a significant one.

“This contract award announcement marks a significant step towards achieving the target of having the Adare Bypass in place by the autumn of 2027. However, expectations should be tempered considering the scale of the project and the time remaining.

“Despite the work done to date, the project still poses significant challenges and risks that are outside the control of the Council,” the Mayor warned.

“Limerick City and County Council’s commitment to achieve this ambitious target remains steadfast.”

Limerick TD and Minister for Further and Higher Patrick O’Donovan said that the project gives him “great pride to be part of the government that has worked so hard to get this project up and running”.

“This next phase is a welcome step along the journey to delivering for the infrastructure needs of Adare, Limerick, and the surrounding Mid West region. We are committed to building and improving our roads network and will continue to invest in delivering important transport projects like this, across the country,” the Limerick Minister said.
