Number of Limerick schools sending students to third level remains high, feeder schools report shows

A NUMBER of Limerick schools are topping the table when it comes to sending their students on to third level education.

The Irish Independent Feeder Schools report, published this week, showed that four Limerick schools sent 100 per cent of their students on to third level education in 2024.

Glenstal Abbey, Laurel Hill Coláiste, Coláiste Íde Agus Iosef in Abbeyfeale, and Laurel Hill Secondary School all had 100 per cent of their students go on to third level education this year.

This represents an increase for all but one, with Laurel Hill Coláiste retaining its 100 per cent retention rate from 2023.

Glenstal’s rate rose to 100 per cent this year from 90 per cent in 2023, Coláiste Íde Agus Iosef rose from 78 per cent last year, while Laurel Hill Secondary School sent 96 per cent of its students onto third level education in 2023.

Hazelwood College in Dromcollogher has 99 per cent of its students progress to third level education this year, while CBS Sexton Street saw 94 per cent of its students progress, a significant jump from 62 per cent the previous year.

Castletroy Community College had a 93 per cent progression rate this year, Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh had a 91 per cent progression rate, down one per cent on last year, while Ardscoil Rís, which had a 100 per cent progression rate in 2023, was on 88 per cent in 2024.

Dooradoyle’s Crescent College Comprehensive had 87 per cent of students going on to third level education this year, Salesian Secondary School in Pallaskenry had 86 per cent, John the Baptist Community School in Hospital also had 86 per cent, Mercy Community College, Rathkeale had 85 per cent, Coláiste Iósaef, Kilmallock was on 81 per cent, while Mungret Community College was on 79 percent.

Thomond Community College had a 78 per cent progression rate, Villiers School was on 77 per cent , Scoil Mhuire Agus Ide in Newcastle West was on 76 per cent, Coláiste Nano Nagle was on 74 per cent, while Croom’s Coláiste Chiaráin was on 73 per cent.

St Munchin’s College sat at 70 per cent in 2024, Scoil Na Tríonóide Naofa in Doon was also on 70 per cent, Coláiste Mhuire in Askeaton was on 66 per cent, Scoil Pol in Kilfinnane was on 63 per cent, St Clement’s was on 62 per cent, Ard Scoil Mhuire in Corbally was on 60 per cent, Limerick Educate Together in Castletroy was on 56 per cent, while Desmond College in Newcastle West had 45 per cent of its students progress to third level education this year.

However, the feeder schools figures don’t take into account students who choose to take up Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses, or those who go on to take up an apprenticeship or start working directly after school.
