MIC students honoured at annual college awards

ALMOST half a million euro was awarded to students of Mary Immaculate College (MIC) in scholarships, awards, and bursaries at the college’s annual awards ceremony.

And Clare hurler and GPA player of the year Adam Hogan was awarded the Student Outstanding Achievement of the Year award for winning a hat trick comprising the All-Ireland Hurling final with Clare, the County Club Championship with Feakle, and with the college in the Fitzgibbon Cup.

Nearly €10,000 was awarded to first year MIC students based on their Leaving Certificate results, with a further nine students who had excelled in their sporting fields presented with Munster GAA bursaries worth €750 each.

Five Elite Sports Scholars were celebrated, with Kerry footballer Aoife Dillane, Ireland rugby player Clara Barrett, Clare hurlers Shane Meehan and Ronan O’Connor, and Laois footballer Katie Donoghue all being honoured

Concertina player Rachel Mahony from Ennis was awarded the Ashling Murphy Memorial Scholarship, jointly presented by MIC and the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation to recognise first year Bachelor of Education students for their exceptional achievement and talent in the field of traditional Irish music.

Three MIC researchers were acknowledged for their recent Research Ireland Government of Ireland funding awards, including Simon Brennan, Evans Amoako Amoah,  and Dr Geraldine Brassil.

MIC President Professor Dermot Nestor congratulated all the awardees, saying: “We honour our recipients for their achievements. But more importantly, we celebrate the motivations that propelled them towards their goals, and the commitments that enabled them to be secured.”
