THE suggestion was made at County Hall that the local authority sends just one councillor per St Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City and Rockaway Beach in Queens County, NY, in 2025.

Speaking at November’s full monthly meeting of Limerick City and County Council (LCCC), Social Democrats councillor Shane Hickey-O’Mara deemed the thought a thrifty money-saving exercise.

“I think it’s very expensive,” the City North representative said as nominations for foreign travel came up for consideration.

As well as parades in New York City and Rockaway Beach, a delegation to attend the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah, Georgia, was also for consideration. However, sending only one councillor to each of the New York parades, Cllr Hickey-O’Mara felt was sufficient.

He was informed that delegations have been approved to attend and will be discussed by party leaders.
