A CELEBRATION of the career of the legendary Denis Allen, creator of the beloved anthem Limerick You’re a Lady happens at Lime Tree Theatre on Thursday, February 20. This special concert will feature performances by some of Limerick’s finest singers and artists, alongside friends who collaborated with Denis on his musical journey. Special guests include Louise Morrissey, Denis Carey, Denis Ryan (of Ryan’s Fancy), Emma Langford, and Shaun O’Dowd, with Lorcan Murray of Lyric FM serving as M.C.

Denis Allen, a proud Limerick native, penned Limerick You’re a Lady in 1979. The song dominated the Irish charts for five weeks and remained a staple throughout the year. Over the past 46 years, this enduring anthem has been passionately sung by Limerick residents at gatherings ranging from weddings to hurling finals and other sporting events, symbolizing the deep pride locals have for their city and county. The song has been recorded by a wide array of artists, including Joe Dolan, Daniel O’Donnell, Suzanne Murphy, Frank Patterson, and even the Moscow Red Square Male Choir. A Danish rendition of the song even reached the top of the charts in Denmark, a testament to its universal appeal and Denis Allen’s exceptional talent.

Denis’s songwriting legacy extends far beyond this iconic anthem, with evocative works such as Lonely in London, Late Starters in Love, Shannon River, and Killarney in My Dreams. His ability to weave heartfelt storytelling into his music places him among Ireland’s songwriting greats.

This celebratory concert at the Lime Tree Theatre is a fitting tribute to Denis Allen’s remarkable contributions to music and the cultural heritage of Limerick. It promises to be an unforgettable evening of music and gratitude.
